Helping resolve performance concerns about dentists, doctors and pharmacists

We help local healthcare managers and practitioners to understand, manage and prevent performance concerns. We give general advice on performance management and good practice. Where there are specific concerns about practitioner performance and patient safety we help to clarify the concerns, understand what is leading to them and support their resolution. Our aim is to get involved early in order to restore safe and valued practice wherever possible. NCAS offers:

  • Advice – from experts with backgrounds in clinical practice, healthcare and human resources management, signposting to other resources to help you manage the concern.

  • Specialist interventions – including facilitation, mediation, performance assessment, action planning and back to work support.

  • Shared learning – from our case experience, evaluation and research. We provide workshops and conferences to build local skills.

We develop assessment methods for examining clinical performance, drawing on worldwide best practice. We also train assessors to use them.

We use casework analyses to help us understand the epidemiology of performance concerns better. We have a programme of evaluation, research and development in place to underpin NCAS initiatives and services.

We offer advice to managers on suspension and exclusion to help ensure that these measures are used only when absolutely necessary. We publish regular statistics on the use of suspension and exclusion.

We share lessons from our case experience, evaluation and research through our good practice guides and a programme of training events with healthcare managers.

We build partnerships with colleges, deaneries and others, to make performance improvement planning a more coherent operation.

We work across the UK with offices in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh as well as London and part-time advisers in all of the countries served.

See our Handbook as well as this website for more information.

Information for practitioners

We work with practitioners as well as managers, providing independent and fair advice without being a substitute for defence organisation, trade union or legal representation.
